What if the gift God gives you is not meant to elevate you, but to encourage someone else?

On this episode of Backstage with Randy Phillips, Randy sits down with his longtime friend and Phillips, Craig & Dean bandmate, Dan Dean, for a conversation about friendship, songwriting, ministry, and more than three decades of following God together.

Throughout the episode, Dan’s stories reveal a simple truth: faithfulness often means trusting God with the outcome, even when your plans do not unfold the way you expected.

How Do You Recognize the Gifts God Has Given You?

Dan began taking piano lessons as a child, but like many kids, he eventually wanted to quit.

His mother saw something he could not yet fully recognize. She encouraged him to keep going because she believed he had a gift. When she finally allowed him to stop at 16, it lasted only two months before he returned to the piano on his own.

Sometimes other people recognize God’s gifts in us before we do.

The calling may begin quietly, through practice, service, and ordinary opportunities long before anyone sees the larger picture.

Does God Care More About Talent or the Heart?

One of Dan’s best-known songs, “Favorite Song of All,” began with a simple question.

After hearing different styles of Christian music at a concert, Dan wondered which kind of music Jesus enjoyed most. His conclusion became the heart of the song: God is not primarily concerned with the style. He cares about the heart behind the worship.

That truth reaches far beyond music.

God is not asking us to perform perfectly. He wants lives that are sincerely surrendered to Him.

What Happens When Your Plan Gets Rejected?

Perhaps the most moving story in the conversation comes from a song Dan deeply believed in called “Where Amazing Happens.”

He presented it for a Phillips, Craig & Dean album. It was passed over.

Then he tried again.

It was passed over again.

Years later, the song reached singer TaRanda Greene during a season of deep grief after the death of her husband. The message connected with her story and helped awaken something in her. She eventually recorded it.

Dan came away with a powerful realization: sometimes God gives you something, and it is not meant for you. It is meant for somebody else.

That is a beautiful picture of surrender.

Not every closed door means the gift was wrong. Sometimes God simply has a different destination for it.

Trust God With the Outcome

Dan Dean’s story reminds us that calling is not about controlling where our gifts take us.

It is about offering them faithfully.

Practice the gift. Share it when God opens the door. Keep your heart focused on Him. And when the outcome looks different than you imagined, trust that God may be doing something far beyond what you can see.
